I think I'm going to reread The Hobbit, and perhaps follow it with Lord of the Rings. I haven't actually read LotR in it's entirety. And the last time I tried to read it, was when the Return of the King Extended Edition was first released in 2004.
Hope you enjoy them! The Hobbit has been my favorite book since grade school. It's what got me into LotR.
I started with the movies (LotR trilogy), then read The Hobbit, followed by watching An Unexpected Journey, then reading The Lord of the Rings, then watching The Desolation of Smaug, and then wrapping things up by reading The Silmarillion and watching The Battle of the Five Armies.

I have yet to read Unfinished Tales, the Children of Hurin, and so on.

Unfinished Tales has some cool segments. Haven't read all of Children of Hurin myself, though I know the basic outline of it thanks to The Silmarillion.

Reading Gone Baby Gone. Holy sh!t it's amazing. I'll be surprised if Affleck's adaptation comes close to being this good. I hope he sticks to the source material...

It was released years ago.

I know it was.... I haven't seen it yet, so, I obviously am saying that once I get to watching it, I'll be surprised if it's as good as the book.

Haven't read the book, but that movie's great- in my top 20. That being said, knowing what will happen will take it down a bit for sure, the twists and turns (especially the finale) are a big part of what makes it great.

Make sure you watch the movie afterward if you are able to finish it.

No way it can be worse than Chapter 11 of Anthem.

Exactly my point. If you finished that, you can finish The Cat in the Hat.

Bump because I finally started reading 1984. Only read the first chapter (it's getting too dark to read in the car), but it's already pretty eerie.

That book is all right. I honestly find it better written than Brave New World (the book it's most often compared to), but I still think BNW's concept is more likely. People are far more willing to let pleasure control them than pain.

I've been trying to read Lord of the Rings finally... it's rough going. That book is honestly the densest, most impenetrable load of nonsense I've ever sat through. But I'm going to try and at least make it to Strider's first appearance, which is when my friend Will says it starts getting good. It'll be tough getting there, though. Tolkein may have been a good world-builder, but he seriously didn't know how to edit. He just spent an entire chapter on mushrooms.

I also just read Voltaire's Candide, which is totally awesome.

I read Fellowship of the Ring (and The Hobbit beforehand) at some point while I was in high school, and ended up enjoying it once I got past Tolkein's way of writing. Was never a fan of the random song breaks or the weird focus on random things (like you mentioned), but the story and world building is just too fascinating for me. Never got around to Two Towers or Return of the King though (well, I read half of the former, then stopped for some reason).
