Jed's deciding on colleges tomorrow. He's thinking of majoring in Genocide Studies. No, that's not a typo.

One of the colleges is in the middle of fuckwhere, lol.  The best thing they got is a Walmart.  I actually told him to go to that one.  Maybe getting him away from a party school would keep him from catching AIDs.

"Party school" is pretty much the only thing he has to say about that second college. It's good to know he's got his priorities in order.
So Jed whittled his options down to two near polar opposite colleges? Seems like a somewhat unsatisfying result either way.
I will never be able to fathom the party school mentality. I avoided applying to Santa Barbara this time around specifically because of its reputation as a haven for degenerate debauchery.
I suppose I could justify going to a party school as long as their academic merit offset said excess; however, I would personally just avoid the parties myself.

Do you know which school Jed chose?

The party school, to study genocide. Paasche should approve on both counts.

Okay Chico State is a nightmare institution with overrated but big parties.  Stop dissing UCSB though, or I'll have to throw another Half-Baked gif your way...

UCSB isn't bad, just not my scene. And it's changed a lot in the past few years. But yeah, Chico State is easily the worst California state college. Literally every retard from my high school went there, including Ogre.

Ogre is a national treasure...

But I haven't been back at UCSB in over 10 years - so maybe it's total garbage now.  It wasn't in the early '90s though, I can tell you that for sure.

I don't think anyone else here watches this show, but this scene has some of the best comedic timing this side of Seinfeld.

In his attempts to set up a party for my mom's 60th birthday, my dad has inadvertently destroyed my family. I'm trying to wrap my head around how to fix this one, but it's breaking my brain. Here's the sequence of events:

> My dad emails my Aunt (Mom's sister) telling her she should "invite herself down" for the birthday.
> Aunt complies, sends my Mom an email. Mom is unaware that Dad told her to do so.
> Mom tells Dad she said no-- in actuality, it's because she doesn't want to have to cook vegetarian food, and because my Aunt and my Dad always argue about politics.
> Dad emails Aunt, tells her that Mom doesn't really want to do anything.
> Mom now informs Dad that she told Aunt we were going to be in Oregon. In other words... doing something.
> By now, Aunt has probably guessed that Mom doesn't want her down here.

My dad has informed me of each step of this clusterfuck along the way. At this point, if any of these people mentions this to another person, the tinderbox blows. This will be an interesting few days.

Remember when you posted that answer claiming plots built on miscommunication are unrealistic?

In all seriousness, this is a crappy situation; not much else to be said here. Though, "because she doesn't want to have to cook vegetarian food, and because my Aunt and my Dad always argue about politics" part is interesting. So, your aunt is clearly a vegetarian, but is she on the Republican side as well, or just so far left you have family arguments anyway?

Well, it's not always necessarily politics. My Aunt is extremely far left; she grows weed in her greenhouses and she's never liked my Dad because he works at a bank. She thinks he's a corporate sell-out. And I love her, but she's definitely insufferable sometimes. Last year she planned to treat her husband's cancer with crystals and "herbal remedies," and when my mom said that was a dumb idea, she said "Well, I believe in science." I don't know if she thinks vaccines cause autism, but I wouldn't be surprised. So honestly, I see where my mom is coming from here.

If anyone has ever wondered about my irrational hatred for vegans and socialists, I'd call this "exhibit A."

The albatross returns

???
Around the time Batman v Superman came out John gave the theatrical cut a 3/10. His review described it as a an overbloated “Albatross of filmmaking.”

Ah - so he's latched onto another generic term to unilaterally dismiss a film even if it's true or not.  Like how he described Truth or Dare as "full of jump scares" when there wasn't a single one in my memory (not that the movie was any good but jump scares was NOT a reason).  Probably makes it easier for him to "review" films he hasn't seen.

John is always really easy to please when it comes to films.  You'd expect someone who sees this many films to be much harsher on them, but he hands out high scores like candy on Halloween.  Either that, or he hates something for the sole purpose of having a contrarian opinion (like giving Blockers a 4/10 or Girls Trip a 2/10).

To my knowledge he’s only used the term twice (unless there are numerous other reviews where he used it), so I wouldn’t immediately say that. Even so, I doubt that the other film he called an Albatross is all that much worth defending - it’s been universally lambasted thus far.

To be fair, Truth or Dare was a Toucan of a film.

But there weren't jump scares.  To say Truth or Dare sucked because there were too many jump scares is like saying Dungkirk sucked because there was too much blood and action.

Wouldn't it be more like saying Dunkirk sucked because there was too much dialogue? I might be misunderstanding.

No - there were little to no jump scares in Truth or Dare.  Just like there was little to no bloody action (for a war movie) in Dungkirk.
