John Tyler has abandoned ship...
« on: April 19, 2018, 01:33:00 pm »
...he sent this DM to our Twitter account this morning.  Why he didn't just post it here, I have no idea.  He seems pretty salty in my follow up conversation with him - so clearly he's upset about something.  Here's his original message if anyone is interested...

As of today, I will no longer be a member of the Movie Watcher's Oasis. In regards to reasons as to why I will be leaving, truth be told, everything about is simply getting old for me and it feels like a chore. Not to mention, the environment has gotten too mean-spirited and honestly toxic for my tastes personally. The ugly shouting matches, the discussions that devolve into completely different subjects, the mistaking of nitpicks (i.e. bloodless throat-slitting) or baseless arguments ("The Shape of Water is liberal pandering!") as legitimate complaints with films... I'm just so sick of it. This all made me come to the conclusion that the Oasis is something I really don't need anymore and that I have much better things to do with my time and with my life. I'm not going to ignore the good experiences I've had on there, but ultimately, I feel it's time to make a change, and that change starts with my departure. Take care.

Let's be real... this is because of Frank and Bread.

It seems awfully coincidental NOT to be from his perspective...but, I mean, we've all been way harsher on him (and each other) in the past.  What happened yesterday was pretty tame by our standards I think.

Dude that was nothing, that was a non-issue. It was nothing honestly, donít understand what got him so upset.

When I mentioned the bloodless throat slitting scene  it didnít even affect my score for Black Panther all that much. I just found it to be funny because the directorís ambitions were constrained by the PG-13 rating in that specific moment.

I suppose, though, if he needs some space we ought to respect his decision. Heís still going to be on Letterboxd so we can contact him there.

Sometimes this board has more drama than my friend group right now (exacerbated due to it being prom week no less).

I didn't even know to what he was referring tbh.  If that's the kind of stuff that has his panties bunched up, then I'm not really sure what to say.

I said the same - I told him that was pretty tame stuff by our standards.  He didn't say it was from that exchange.  But the timing says otherwise.

Do you think me saying that Truth or Dare was a good film contributed to his decision to leave?  Only one way to find out.

I honestly don't know.  We didn't go too far down that road.  I asked a couple of questions - he was pretty short with his responses, so i wished him luck.

Braden basically calling him retarded was definitely the straw that broke the camel's back lol.  Also, the environment on here really isn't particularly mean-spirited and definitely not toxic; whatever though, he'll probably be back within a month.

Agree with everything you just said.  And IF we are mean-spirited (which most sites are), we are definitely NOT any MORE mean-spirited then we have ever been.  If anything, we've gotten a bit more tame with time...

Also - as he followed then unfollowed our Twitter account - looking at his, two things really stood out.

1 - He retweets Chris Stuckmann ad nauseum - so I think the jabs about him copying Stuckmann (to which I'm partially responsible) probably finally got to him.

2 - He's become ultra, ultra liberal. When he's not tweeting about movies he's retweeting everything that's horrible/awful/evil about conservatives and everything that's great/purist about liberals.  So our political discussions where a lot of us have become more central has likely irked him (though he didn't mention that specifically in the farewell speech, I'm extrapolating here).

John has been around for many years and has seen how vicious our sense of humour can be.  He's just being N/A (my dad owns a movie theatre) because people call him out on his shіt here, which I doubt happens to him at home considering he's an only child and his parents seem to spoil him.

^THIS.  But I'm still curious why he sends the message to our Twitter account instead of posting it here.  I mean, WTF was his mind process in that action?

This is like when Diego and Cutler recently left. We all knew they'd be back. It was just a matter of how long. I mean, Diego came back even after you (we) wrote that piece about his "questionable manhood", so I doubt Johnny, who has survived much worse, will stay gone over being called an idiot.

Agreed.  It was just odd waking up first thing in the morning to a DM on our Twitter account.
