Title: The Decline of Modern Music
Post by: Charles Longboat Jr. on May 19, 2015, 05:17:15 pm
This is essentially a rehash of Moody's "Rant about Modern Music" thread on TG.

First off, only at the Billboard (or the People/Kid/Teen's Choice) Awards would the Rolling Stones lose an award to One Direction. Also, Florida Georgia Line and Igloo Australia getting awards makes me somber. http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/bbma/6568580/billboard-music-awards-2015-winners-list
Disclaimer: I do not know if the Stones sing well live, but this is still a blow to the industry's credibility nonetheless.

The Kids Choice Awards are one of the worst awards shows. The other two you mentioned suck as well.

Beverly Hills Cop 2 is totally a children's movie, as is Big Momma's House... also, Austin Powers 3 apparently was up for 'Best Fart in a Movie".

When I arrived to RT's DVD forum, I noticed an Oscar reaction thread. I have a feeling something like that would be the case.

I agree that there is some good modern music, but often times those groups don't break into the mainstream.

Also, See You Again is followed by the likes of Earned It, GDFR, Sugar, and Thinking Out Loud in the top ten.

Sugar is just shallow. Nothing more, nothing less.

However, GDFR seems to only be liked because of that saxophone sample from Low Rider (After listening to the former carefully, you can hear more of the Low Rider song), and like all of Flo Rida's other songs, nothing else is memorable, for he is a hack bereft of talent, creativity, and integrity.

Personally, I don't mind Thinking Out Loud. Either way though, the top of the charts are just a few songs that hardly encompass all modern music. Catbus raises an excellent point as well, most of us weren't around years ago and didn't hear all the music that came out, we just listen to what's become well known as great (mostly, of course that isn't completely true, but still, you see my point).

I've finally found two songs that sort of justify this thread's existence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T59kB3hq3Yg
Probably Maroon 5's worst to date. Worse than Animals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV2uebhnqOw
This may or may not be worse. *Shudders*
Also, I call dibs on the potential band name "The Decline of Modern Music" unless someone has called dibs prior to me.

Again, I can't say I hate that Maroon 5 song.  I've always had a MAJOR soft spot for Maroon 5.

Pretty Girls, however, has absolutely no beat, it sounds off, and Britney and Iggy are basically walking autotune machines, so it sucked.

I've liked Maroon 5's first couple of albums since my childhood, but this song is a massive comedown. The lyrics are nigh incoherent and they rip off Jeremih of all people. It also repeats that hilariously awful songwriting technique from Animals in which they repeat the last syllable or two in a word in the chorus. Levine's autotune is quite blatant as well.

Simply put, this is Maroon 5's worst song, and one of the worst I've ever heard.

Oh yes, I'm racist. That's why some of my favorite musical artists are black. (Kendrick Lamar, DMX, Tupac Shakur, Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube's older stuff, Dr. Dre's older stuff, Eazy E, etc)

Don't even say that because mainstream music is likely to stoop that low in a few years. If Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea can come out with Pretty Girls then I wouldn't be shocked if something like this will be playing in bars.

Yes, without question. Not only is it worse than Blood on the Dance Floor but it's the worst song I've ever heard in my life. There are no redeeming qualities. The music itself can be created by me if I read "Auto Tune For Dummies" and the pitiful excuse for lyrics do nothing but throw fuel onto the fire of superficiality and shallowness in our society. There's no melody and there's no singing. It's two spoiled c.u.n.t.s spewing more drivel out of their mouths and making money off of the c.u.m soaked w.h.o.r.e.s who blast this music while blowing all of their daddy's money on Coach bags.

Maybe he did (honestly don't remember). But you're constantly adding stuff like "Your opinion" or "Subjectively, of course" to everyone's statements and it just gets a little irritating. I have no problem with you calling the song an abomination, but just don't constantly mention how something is a person's opinion after they make a statement, since you don't quantify everything you say either.

I don't think this is a problem with modern music as much as the selections of some awards shows. Quality modern music certainly exists.

That's true.  The current #1 song on Billboard is actually a decent song (See You Again).
I agree that there is some good modern music, but often times those groups don't break into the mainstream.

Also, See You Again is followed by the likes of Earned It, GDFR, Sugar, and Thinking Out Loud in the top ten.

Uh...I like Sugar and GDFR as guilty pleasures...

*runs away*

Sorry, Moody, but I'm going to have to express my great disagreement with you.  I can't stand either of 'em.  Especially G.D.F.R.  And I'm saying this as someone who actually thinks that Alkaline Trio is a good band.  No, really.  Let's look at G.D.F.R.'s lyrics:

"I know what you came here to see
If you're a freak, then ya coming home with me
And I know what you came here to do
Now bust it open let me see you get loose
It's going down for real
It's going down for real
It's going down for real"

Firstly, this Sage the Gemini dude sounds incredibly bored here.  Secondly, let's look at the content.  It's a song about dancing in the club and bringing girls home for sex!  How amazingly original!  There are no other songs clogging the radio and the Billboard Top 40 about these things EVER!

"Your girl just kissed a girl, I do bi chicks"

What the actual hell?  I get that it's a pun on "Dubai", and that Flo Rida (one of the worst musicians working right now) is trying to go with a Middle East/United Arab Emirates theme here, but that doesn't excuse that it's objectifying women and is a downright horrible pun.

"Shake for a sheikh, I'm throwing these Emirates in the sky
Spending this As-salamu alaykum, peace to M.O.N.E.Y
"

Firstly, how does Flo Rida throw a country into the sky?  Secondly, "As-salamu alaykum" is Arabic for "peace be with you", and NOT a synonym for money, no matter how hard he tries to connect the two at the end of the line.

"I love my beaches, south beaches, surfboard in high tide
I could just roll up cause I'm swoll up
So that birthday cake get the cobra
"

Firstly, this one starts with another terrible pun, except that this one is also really, really old.  Secondly, "birthday cake" and "cobra"?  Really?  It wouldn't be a massive hit if it didn't have awful penis and vagina references.

"Bugatti for real, I'm cold bruh
That auto-biography rover
Got the key to my city it's over
It's no thots, only Anna Kournikova's
I set records, ratchets hold up
"
This bit has tons and tons of misogyny in it!  ****-shaming?  Check!  Judging girls by their physical appearance?  Check!  Objectifying women and treating them as pieces of meat to be used for sex?  Check!  Sexist curse words?  Check!

In short, there's so much wrong with this song, lyrically and musically.  The one good thing about it is the instrumentation, and apparently that isn't even original, but sampled from another song.

Fall Out Boy always sucked. "Dance Dance" is one of my most hated songs, and that new one that plays all the time on the radio is just as awful. Taking Back Sunday is heads and shoulders above Fall Out Boy. Tell All Your Friends is one of my favorite albums.

I miss when Fall Out Boy were good.  It's been many years.  I was always much more of a Taking Back Sunday guy, though.   They haven't sold out yet, thankfully.  Happiness Is was a phenomenal album.

Fallout Boy always sucked. "Dance Dance" is one of my most hated songs, and that new one that plays all the time on the radio is just as awful. Taking Back Sunday is heads and shoulders above Fallout Boy. Tell All Your Friends is one of my favorite albums.

I didn't mean "Dance Dance"; that song was pretty bad.  I meant "The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes".   Everything they've done since Take This To Your Grave has sucked.

It's great to see another Taking Back Sunday fan.  Tell All Your Friends is genius, although Louder Now is my favorite of theirs.

You like Fall Out Boy.

If anyone's feeling suicidal, this music video will give you the urge to bash your own head in:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGt_JGHYEO4

Maybe for racists like you.
Oh yes, I'm racist. That's why some of my favorite musical artists are black. (Kendrick Lamar, DMX, Tupac Shakur, Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube's older stuff, Dr. Dre's older stuff, Eazy E, etc)

Frankly, the only one of those that are any good is Kendrick Lamar.  I'm not a rap guy-- it has nothing to do with race.

It's funny that this is better than any song made in this decade.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrBj3u5dPgM

Don't even say that because mainstream music is likely to stoop that low in a few years. If Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea can come out with Pretty Girls then I wouldn't be shocked if something like this will be playing in bars.
Just curious, Chase...do you find Pretty Girls worse than that Blood on the Dance Floor album that nearly killed you?

#NylandRant

I agree totally.  "Pretty Girls" is a crime against humanity.  You could've used a bit less sexism in your rant, though.   And Blood on the Dance Floor are awful, too.

A statement that I had made saying that I enjoyed a few very early songs by Fall Out Boy have been blown WAY out of proportion.  As such, I should put these rumors to rest.  I am in no way, shape or form a Fall Out Boy fan, and have in fact lost all respect for them over the years. Behold, my ratings of their entire discography:

Take This To Your Grave-- 6/10
From Under The Cork Tree-- 4/10
Infinity On High-- 3/10
Folie a Deux-- 3/10
Save Rock and Roll-- 2/10
American Beauty/American Psycho-- 3/10

Aaron, I'm well aware of YGS and jacksfilms. I'm a huge fan of him.

What I'm wondering is why would you send that post to him when it clearly had no grammatical errors... >.>

Just heard one of the worst songs ever.

Look up the song Panda by Desiigner.  Truly an example of how low quality modern music is.

7 Years by Lukas Graham gives me faith in the masses.

Hardly. The modern music Moody's talking about is 2010s pop and rap, which I avoid almost entirely. I mostly listen to metal and post-grunge, and you can hate my taste if you wish, but these genres are hardly very popular at all in the "modern music" Moody refers to.

Quality song.
There's basically nothing I listen to outside of rap, the Beatles and Bob Dylan, but that song is really good.

That's one of those songs that I've heard quite a few times without knowing the title. That one's fine.

Just curious: Do you listen to Rage Against the Machine?

Do you listen to Rage Against the Machine?

Their song at the end of the Matrix was really good.  That's the extent of my knowledge of them.

Just curious: Do you listen to Siouxsie and the Banshees?

No- pretty much everything in my library is either rap, Bob Dylan or the Beatles and anything else I hear is just from the radio or friends playing it (although the second one of those does introduce me to a fair amount of stuff in all fairness). The extent of my knowledge of Rage Against the Machine is a one line reference to them in a Lupe Fiasco song lol.

Ah. They're one of the groups that meshed rap with rock/metal in the 90's, and RATM is known for their very far left lyrical matter - thus it would have made sense that you listened to them.

I don't understand how anyone can claim music is in decline:

I just heard the song Me Too by Meghan Trainor.  Literally the most enraging song I've ever heard.  The first line of the song says it all.
