Title: Has anyone played any of the Far Cry games?
Post by: ChillinDylan Godsend on April 12, 2018, 02:00:12 pm
Hearing great things about Far Cry 5.  Have never played any of the Far Cry games, but I YouTubed a little bit of the action from Far Cry 2, and it looks pretty cool.  Has anyone here played any of these games?

Yeah I played 3 that was good. 4 I stopped playing cause I got bored of it. In the middle of 5 right now and it's good, but I know the ending and it's honestly atrocious how it ends.

Nope. 1 aged pretty poorly from what I hear, but I know some people who swear by 2.

We actually had 2 and what I think was an expansion pack for 1 ("Back to Paradise?") That one did age badly; the only notable cool things about it now are mutants that easily jump like 10+ meters to kill you in 1-2 hits, but drown in water almost instantly, and jeeps that have both a machine gun turret, and a grenade launcher alternate fire on it.

Unfortunately, the other notable things are the highly passive human AI (many don't react to you at all even if you shoot everybody around them. Also, if they get into water, they basically stop doing anything as well, and become sitting ducks) and the atrocious checkpoints that are located practically randomly. I tried playing on hardest difficulty, but all it does is ensure you die after killing some 20 mercs before they react because the 21st is in some bush you would never spot in time. My brother finished it on normal, and it wasn't much more impressive afterwards.

He also played through about a half of the second before abandoning it. From observing it, I'm utterly baffled by the scattered love-in comments I see it getting these days. To me, it tried to be "realistic" and failed miserably by adding all the things that make it more inconvenient while keeping equally frustrating unrealistic things alongside them.

I already posted along these lines on Russian forums, but I'll say this again: it's a game where your guns rust depending on how much you shoot from them (you can find videos of machine guns rusting mid-burst) and jam randomly as you shoot, but which doesn't allow you to oil these same guns and clean out the barrels to prevent these things from happening the way people actually do in real life. It forces you to look on a tiny map your character holds out in first person, yet has road signs literally pointing to your supposed safe house. Enemies will regularly try to drive you over, and quite successfully, yet they  respawn in their outposts in exact same positions with zero change to anything. They take ~6+ bullets to kill because your starting guns are apparently that weak (to the point early sniper rifle to bare chest doesn't kill), yet you can repair vehicles indefinitely by jiggling a single bolt. The same vehicles also need no fuel (which exists, but only for Molotovs) and have indefinite ammo in their turrets (the first one actually limited you to 400 bullets & 50 grenades, which was more than enough if you used it right.)

In short, I don't get any praise for it.

I saw that ending, and it reminded me of Iron Sky, so I have mixed feelings about it. I suppose that if they knew a conventional ending would just highlight the entire premise is ridiculous, and so went for this semi-justifying approach. Their goal was probably to show all of us currently buried in entertainment and what not can have their lives rendered pointless in a blink, just like how the game itself was rendered pointless, but it still feels hopelessly muddled.

Probably the kindest thing to say is that the writers got trapped within their own structure. Silent protagonist with no dialogue works in pure action like Doom, or grandfathered cases like Half-Life, but it's ridiculous in an open-world game that's supposedly all about your freedom - especially when there's not even a defined protagonist whose personality could naturally dictate your options without stifling them. (I.e. it makes sense Arkham Batman sees little reason to wax lyrical to any of his opponents when he intends to beat them all down. It doesn't make much sense a rookie cop silently listens to some 26 y.o. pleas before opening fire first.)

Playing a lot of Far Cry 1 (Instincts Predator).  Even though the graphics and mechanics aren't nearly as smooth as the newer XBox One games like CoD WWII and Battlefield 1, this is simply a better game overall.

Man that big blob boss was tough...luckily around the 5th time trying it I realized I still had C4 I could lay around and do some damage while I ran in a circle.

These are exactly the problems I'm having in this first game.  Sometimes I'll get 3 checkpoints in a 10 minute timeframe.  But it seems that, when I complete a really hard area, I can be assured that there won't be a checkpoint for another 1/2 hour.  It's happened on 3 separate occasions where I've had to repeatedly replay a section because I'll have to get through 5 or 6 really tough battles to get to that next checkpoint.  Also, you almost have to "nudge" your way into an area - if you just walk in and get too far, you are immediately surrounded by a bunch of dudes in bushes and there's no way out at that point because they are in front, behind, and to both sides of you.

Other than that, I'm actually enjoying the 1st game quite a bit.  It's definitely a bit of a throwback from a graphic and mechanic perspective, but it's a lot of fun.

Just finished Far Cry Instincts Predator (the original Far Cry game)

This was a solid overall game.  Reminded me a bit of a more expansive F.E.A.R. but without the horror element.  Obviously, being 12 years old, the graphics and the mechanics are a bit rudimentary.  However, the story is solid, there are a variety of weapons, and it's a fairly difficult game.  AI wasn't as strong back then, so there are some glitches as to how and when they are alerted to you.  But the terrain changes quite a bit, you do drive a variety of vehicles, and you have some cool powers that aid you in certain circumstances.  Getting used to the old style controller set-up took a bit of time (LT doesn't zoom it throws grenades - so that was an issue).  Overall, I'd say this is a 7/10 game.  Definitely glad I found this series that I didn't really know anything about.  Will be starting Far Cry 2 sometime tomorrow.

Actually, scratch that.  Apparently I unlocked the Evolution story by beating Instincts.  So I will now move on to that...

I got Far Cry 2 from a Steam sale a while back.

It's been buried under a lot of other games, so I haven't started it yet.

Yeah - I'll be starting it in a couple of weeks if Evolution is as long of a campaign as Instincts was.
