Title: Best and Worst Performances of 2018
Post by: Charles Longboat Jr. on June 29, 2018, 05:36:07 pm
...for current and future discussions regarding the year thus far.

For best performances, I am most definitely on the Toni Collette Oscar train, no matter how unlikely itíd be for her to get awarded. She was easily the most vital element of Hereditary and arguably the most important performance with regards to a filmís quality so far this year.

Ethan Hawke in First Reformed really impressed me. Itís a very subtle performance requiring a display of much emotional restraint (and moments of genuine anguish without trying too hard). Itís one of Hawkeís best performances and Iíd have trouble seeing anyone else in the role.

Brady Jandreau in The Rider is also a natural talent. It helps that his performance is semiautobiographical, but even with that aside he captures a lot of emotion with his facial gestures and sells scenes that would be boring otherwise (like scenes of training horses). Like Hawke, itís hard to describe the weight of the performance; rather, it needs to be experienced.

Joaquin Phoenix in You Were Never Really Here effectively demonstrates his prowess as one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood. He contributes to a lot of the convincing physical elements of his character, such as his slumped walking, but also convincingly sells the traumas of his very damaged protagonist.

Although I grow more sour on Lean on Pete the more I think about it, Charlie Plummer is one element I find keeps this exercise in misery porn afloat. Although his role is constrained by a somewhat flat character where oneís expected to resonate with him almost entirely due to his situation, he remains a compelling lead.

Simon Russell Beale and Steve Buscemi were impressive in The Death of Stalin. Hugh Grant was delightfully hammy in Paddington 2, and Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy made for wonderful co-leads in Thoroughbreds.

I suppose itís because I havenít sought out any real turkeys that I donít have a ďworstĒ performance in mind so far. Guess I can just watch a ton of Netflicks originals to fix that.

Best - Charlize Theron in Tully, Olivia Cooke in Thoroughbreds, Joshua Leonard in Unsane.

Worst - The entire cast of The 15:17 to Paris.

Oh, and how could I forget Domhnall Gleeson in Peter Rabbit?

Did you ever watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Dylan? That might improve your perception of Dennison.

No I haven't.  But the question posed was "worst performances" - and Dennison's performance in Deadpool 2 was astoundingly putrid.

I would definitely recommend it. Itís from the same director as What We Do in the Shadows and Thor Ragnarok (though I imagine itís closer in style to the former given that he actually wrote that one too). Both him and Sam Neill are particularly great in the film.
