Let's talk Star Wars VIII
« on: December 21, 2016, 02:45:29 am »
When I was a kid, I loved Star Wars more than anything. But ever since the Clone Wars TV show came out, I realized a terrible truth... aside from two shining exceptions, this franchise really sucks. The curse has clearly not been broken with the aggressively terrible Rogue One, so it seems I have a decision to make. Either I do what would have been unthinkable to me years ago and stop seeing these films in theaters, or I become one of those stupid man-babies who see movies just because they have a logo stamped on them.

To avoid being a hypocrite, I will have to do the former.

But although I will do my best to avoid seeing Episode VIII in theaters, I must stress that this film might be significantly better than TFA. The characters are established in this new trilogy, so maybe we can stop with the blatant plot rehashes. Daisy Ridley does have real charisma, despite how bad TFA was. And most importantly, JJ Abrams is gone.

I've come to the conclusion that Abrams, the director of The Wrath of Khan (2013), E.T. (2011), and Star Wars: A New Hope (2015), is incapable of directing a big-budget film that does not lean entirely on old ideas. Replacing him is Rian Johnson, director of Looper (a movie I enjoy very much, and the film that spawned the Ashley Taken "plothole" jokes). He also directed Brick, one of my all-time favorites, which shows that he (unlike Lucas, and arguably Abrams) is an actor's director. Johnson just might manage to squeeze something good out of this franchise before it's too late.

Or, of course, the bigger budget and heightened expectations might amplify his pitfalls, and we might end up with a pothole-filed moovy that wood haf ben betur if nolan direkted itt.

Thoughts?

You don't like either of the Clone Wars shows?

Is this an unpopular opinion?

I would concur, but I was never sufficiently bothered to complete even a single episode of that. Although, I'm curious: would you rather watch either one of them again, or rewatch Star Trek Voyager (a show you never seem to mention in conversations about Star Trek)?

I mean, yeah, somewhat.   Even the most vicious prequels detractors tend to think the shows are fine.  How much have you watched?

I think it might be my favorite of the 3 Disney Star Wars films so far if Rian Johnson brings his directorial strengths to the film.  Not to mention, all the characters are established, and we can further see where their character arcs are taking them.  I'm definitely excited.

That's what I was wondering when I saw Shockwave's comment too. My experience with them is small, but my brother watched whichever one is on Netflix fairly recently and I watched a bit with him- seemed terrible, but hey, I was kinda jumping in randomly and didn't see much.

The Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars is awesome. I never cared for the CGI Clone Wars and I never bothered with Rebels.

Might be speaking mostly with nostalgia here, but I enjoyed 2008 Clone Wars series. Yeah, the first couple seasons weren't that great, but by the end of its run it was far more compelling than it had any right to be. Never saw the Tartakovsky show or Rebels for that matter.

Anyway, I'm hoping that Episode VIII at the very least improves on TFA and that Rian Johnson isn't constricted by studio mandate.

I did this intentionally to avoid getting input from filthy Disney fanboys.

I mean, yeah, somewhat.   Even the most vicious prequels detractors tend to think the shows are fine.  How much have you watched?

Saw season one and I'm fairly certain I polished off season two as well. I liked it when I was ten years old, but I really hate it now. I think it's one of the worst things under the Star Wars brand.

Diego, I could follow, hell, even agree with, some of your logic regarding Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars.

What I can't follow is the logic of saying something like this:

I think it's one of the worst things under the Star Wars brand.

about a six-season show you only watched two seasons of.  I know hyperbole's your shtick but that's just downright petty.

In any case, sounds like you haven't seen the Genndy Tartakovsky mini-series at all, so...

just gonna toss this here.

I've heard they'd finished filming Carrie Fisher's scenes in Episode VIII... the question is, will they kill her off at the end or make it a plot point in the opening crawl of Episode IX?

I watched a third of the show... if I didn't like it, is it really my responsibility to go out and watch the other two-thirds? I really don't see the point. I've given up on shows after just one or two episodes. After one or two seasons, my interest should be piqued. But I found the Clone Wars TV show to be, quite frankly, downright childish. Just my opinion though. I also hate the Ewoks.

When you say two shining exceptions, do you mean Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith?  Because the former really isn't very good.  I'd say one exception.

He meant A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.
