Is There Will Be Blood a good introduction to PTA's movies?
« on: January 28, 2017, 08:51:15 pm »
I noticed that it's on Netflix and it'll be leaving in a couple days. I probably don't have time to catch it this weekend, but I figured it might be a good idea to ask, as I have seen none of his movies.

Perhaps this could work as the Paul Thomas Anderson thread on this board.

Haven't seen it in years. I didn't like it much at the time, but it was too long ago to accurately judge.

I'll be honest though, I'm not the one to ask. I dislike PTA's films overall. Inherent Vice is generic fare for anyone who's already seen The Big Lebowski. I never understood the appeal of Magnolia; I thought it was pretty bad. Punch-Drunk Love and Boogie Nights are just okay. The Master needs a rewatch.

It's definitely a fantastic film, but I'd personally recommend Boogie Nights as an introduction to Anderson's works.
Everything is terrible.

Any of PTA's films are a great experience, honestly.  His most recent films are slightly less accessible so maybe I wouldn't start with those, but you can't really go wrong with the guy.

Maybe Inherent Vice is worse, but IDK...needs a re-watch.  Calling it "generic fare" is kinda laughable though.  That's the last thing that I would ever call it.

It went in one ear and out the other for me. I barely remember it, aside from some passing similarities to one of my favorite films. Nothing about it stood out. And this is coming from someone who was really looking forward to it.

Personally if I were to compare to another film, it'd be Filth.  Having said that, if I were to give the film points for anything it's the unique style and execution.  Not that I'm a big fan of the film (I found it PTA's worst, though his films tend to improve on multiple watches due to all the depth in them) but it's far from generic.

I suppose it's unique when compared to standard Hollywood output, but I'm comparing it to movies of its ilk. The Big Lebowski, Chinatown, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, etc. It felt to me like it was trying way too hard to be a cult movie, and you can't manufacture that kind of appeal. It has to be earned. Inherent Vice seemed like it was blending together elements from similar movies without trying to do anything on its own. Compared to, say, the MCU, of course it's original. But that's not a reasonable comparison.
