Paul Schrader, writer of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull as well as the director of Mishima, has a new film that's come out in very limited release. Frankly it's one of my most anticipated of 2018. Also, A24 is distributing, so there's a relative assurance of quality.

Sitting at 98% with 94 reviews on RT and 86 on Metacritic form 40 reviews.

So I just got back from watching this, and I think it might be my favorite of the year. I got a lot of similar vibes from Silence in that itís a slow burn film that tackles a lot of heavy themes (particularly about the dynamic between political dogma and spirituality, the state of American Christianity, and climate change in its relation to faith among others) and juggles them all quite effectively. Ethan Hawke is wonderful and thereís some solid supporting turns from Amanda Seyfried and Cedric the Entertainer, whose characters have a lot more layers than theyíve been given credit for. The film is a lot to take in on one viewing for sure, and I donít think I understand everything I witnessed, but Paul Schrader has made a work that I think might be a masterpiece.

I should mention that despite its slow burn status, this film inspired a multitude of emotions, including the type of anxiety one feels in their stomach during a heavy situation.
