Like The Witch, I thought there were definitely some strong positives, particularly Toni Collette in the lead role and the cinematography which I thought was great and really added a lot. Some of the imagery was also pretty creepy and impactful. However, I also thought the first hour of this movie was pretty dull and that the whole film could've been cut down a fair amount. Furthermore, supernatural horror films like this one are always going to be (for me) less tense than an atmospheric horror piece like A Quiet Place, just because that supernatural element never feels real to me. When I can't imagine being in a situation, it really loses a lot of its potential potency and that was true in this film for me. I also thought the plotting was fairly conventional, although that didn't bother me as much. Probably a 5/10 (same score I gave The Witch) overall.
Lol, what?  A Quiet Place is about a bunch of blind aliens with bulletproof skin who run around killing anything that makes a noise.  It's like The Day of the Triffids, but way shіttier.  Everything about that is supernatural and/or unrealistic.

Hereditary does not rely on supernatural elements whatsoever.   The horror is in the tension between family members, the psychological degradation (particularly of Toni Collette's character), and the passing down of family problems and illnesses through generations.  In my interpretation, there weren't even any supernatural elements in the film - only the twisted perspectives of those who are in an insane family.
It's about verisimilitude, not what's literally possible or not possible. The situations in A Quiet Place feel real because the world is designed for them to be so (like how a wand fight in Harry Potter doesn't feel unrealistic, or a lightsaber fight in Star Wars). However, Hereditary is set in a world that is supposed to feel like the real one. The fact that it's supposed to feel real and then supernatural elements, that we're supposed to take seriously, are added makes the whole thing rather unimpactful for me.
