La La Land
« on: December 04, 2016, 07:47:37 pm »
Not sure whether or not this thread has been created. But I just got back from a screening of this film followed by a Q&A with Damien Chazelle, and I will say that this film was as great as everyone is saying it is. Despite Janet Maslin's terrible interviewing skills, Chazelle's answers were really interesting and compelling. Best film of the year so far if you ask me and I am looking forward to hearing what you all have to say when you get a chance to see it.

I must've watched the new trailer at least 100 times by now.  It looks fantastic.

Yeah, despite the overwhelmingly positive critical reaction, I can't bring myself to have any interest in this one whatsoever.

I saw it because I had to write a school paper review. If someone honestly thinks that BVS had more potential than La La Land... lol.

I'll have to check showtimes later in the week, but as far as I know this won't come to any theaters near me until January. I'm still very optimistic for it, though.

This film looks amazing and I am definitely checking it out as soon as it hits theaters. Damien Chazelle impressed the hell out of me with Whiplash.
Everything is terrible.

I don't really see how that's pertinent at all, but yes I did. What's wrong with seeing a film about one of my all time favorite characters that I expected to like (and incidentally did ended up liking).

Whether you ended up liking it or not is inconsequential; I'm wondering what potential you saw in BVS that you don't see in La La Land. And for the record, I didn't see TASM 2 and that starred one of my all-time favorite characters.

The two are completely different genres. I generally like superhero/action films plus it had Batman; as for La La Land, I usually hate musicals and I haven't been particularly drawn in by the trailers (and the praise I've seen hasn't necessarily been stuff that appeals to me).

Why discriminate against genres? I'm fairly certain a movie from any genre can be good. With BVS, I knew it would suck because it was a sequel to a film I hated. With this, I see no concrete reason not to at least give it a chance. Not enough buildings falling down, I suppose.

Becuase there are some genres I don't like? I'm not saying that there isn't a possibility that the movie will be good, or that there's no possibility that I'll like it, but I tend to dislike musicals and from what I've seen this film probably isn't going to change that no matter how much I liked Whiplash.

I have no idea why you're continuing with the BvS thing, but yeah, there was little chance you were going to like that movie. All that's doing is re-enforcing what I'm saying.

I think I said they didn't count as movies for my yearly lists. I saw some Werner Herzog documentary this year but I didn't include it on my 2016 standings because I don't think it's fair to compare documentaries to other films. There are many documentaries I've seen that I liked.
