Live by Night
« on: December 10, 2016, 09:20:21 pm »
Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and written, produced, directed by, and starring Ben Affleck, Warner Bros.' adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel of the same name co-stars Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Cooper, Chris Messina, Scott Eastwood, Titus Welliver, Anthony Michael Hall, and Derek Mears. Set in the 1920's and 1930's, Live by Night follows Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck), the prodigal son of Boston police captain Thomas Coughlin (Brendan Gleeson). After moving to Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, he becomes a bootlegger, a rum-runner, and eventually, a notorious gangster.

In the past, you criticized me for posting polls on films people have either never heard of or aren't interested in. Now, you criticize me because I'm doing the opposite.

Just stop with these threads.  The Official Movie Watching Thread is good for open dialog and then if a movie is being talked about enough, we make a discussion thread.

I do have to say, the lack of awards buzz surrounding this movie is somewhat surprising given the success of Argo.

Anyway, the film looks solid.

I don't remember seeing this thread before, but I saw the trailers for the film at some point and I remember thinking it looked terrible. I'm getting a Gangster Squad-esque vibe from it. Surprised people were looking forward to this.

How? People loved the last three films he directed (myself included) and Argo won 3 Oscars.

The first three films Affleck directed received scores of 94, 94 and 96 on the Tomatometer and many people, myself included, really enjoyed all three. Why would we not think this would be good?

On a side note, if this does end up being bad I'm gonna be Danny Oh level depressed.

Ouch. I had mild concerns about the trailers looking a bit unfocused and disjointed, but I didn't think it would get reviews this bad.

Hopefully Affleck's only directorial blemish is this one.

Past performance is no indication of future success. Affleck was overdue for a directorial dud, and the trailer dialogue seemed kinda lame to me. "I went to war a soldier and came home an outlaw." I mean... come on.

So... that's why it's taken you so long to stop seeing so many franchise blockbusters you dislike in theatres?

That just doesn't make any sense. Do the next movies from Scorsese and Bay have equal chances of being good?

I can kind of get where he's going with that statement.

A movie from a good director can still suck.  There's no 100% guarantee.  That being said, past performance is most certainly an indication of probable future success.  That's just an objective fact.

I mean, if he had said "Past performance doesn't always indicate future success" I would've agreed and it would have been a  valid critique of me being so sure this would be good. However, saying that the past is "no indication of future success" is just wrong.
