Mother!
« on: August 21, 2017, 12:26:40 pm »
Written and directed by Darren Aronofsky, Mother! stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, and Kristen Wiig. Set for release on September 15th, the psychological horror-thriller centers around Grace (Jennifer Lawrence), a young woman whose tranquil life with her husband Eli (Javier Bardem) at their remote country home is challenged by a mysterious couple (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer) who arrive and lodge with them.

When Frank said that this film looked like Darren Aronofsky as "his most depraved", I laughed.  This shit looks whack.

That dork Aronofsky directed this? Never watching it.

I'm cautiously excited for it, Noah was irritating and I know some people who think the dude stole from Satoshi Kon wholesale with Black Swan. I'll see it though. Anyone who pisses themselves for Suspiria for any other reason than the color saturation and nerd cred will probably dig something like this. Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a believable couple though? They look like they're on the wrong set.

"It's crazy, gorgeous, violent, powerful... And will be the most controversial movie since A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, sure to be studied in film schools for decades to come."

I found spoilers for the film, and I'm not quite sure what to say other than this is going to be an extremely divisive movie.
Goodbye!

The early response to this film is positive. It also has an 86 on Metacritic.

Gonna predict that this will be the most divisive film of the year. Personally I thought it was good (not incredible, but good), and at the very least you won't forgot watching it anytime soon. There's a certain lack of subtlety towards the end that somewhat annoyed me, but almost everything else was solid. I think the most **** up scenes in this were probably the film's best (you'll know it when you see it).

After Knight of Cups and especially The Holy Mountain, I no longer trust you when it comes to these pretentious-ass art films.

You would hate this. It's Aronofsky at his most Aronofsky. Also it has Jennifer Lawrence.

Thinking about checking this out since I can take a friend's car to the theater now and I've never seen an Aronofsky film. Honestly, he doesn't seem like my cup of tea, but I've been meaning to give Requiem for a Dream a shot for a while anyhow.

After Snyder, it's a close contest between Aronofsky and Peter Jackson for my second-least-favorite director. You're entering a world of pain.

Requiem for a Dream is probably his most accessible film. Been a while since I saw it, but it's definitely one of my favorites.

Watch The Wrestler. Powerful film with a truly amazing performance from Mickey Rourke and none of DA's trademark faults.

Maybe I'll watch that this weekend and try to gauge whether I could be down for something significantly more over the top. I like Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, but these sort of pretentious arthouse films (not quite the right terminology there but I can't do any) aren't really my cup of tea.

That, Requiem for a Dream, and Black Swan are the three that I'm interested in seeing. I know The Wrestler used to be on Netflix so if it's still there I'll definitely try to check it out sometime in the future (although I haven't had much time for watching films lately).
