This is still at an 8.1 on IMDb and some of the negative RT reviews are admittedly generic (partially out of reverence for not spoiling it, perhaps). I'm not entirely convinced this isn't a troll campaign (a well executed one at that if that's the case).
Lol, what the fuck is this comment? How could there possibly be a large scale troll campaign against a Star Wars movie?

Force Awakens backlash, I would guess.
From the plot points that my brother just told me, that's not what this is at all (although I support Force Awakens/Rogue One backlash completely). The bad audience reviews are almost certainly due to how this movie (apparently) deals with certain characters and alters the universe as a whole. The idea that it's a large scale troll campaign is beyond idiotic.

Perhaps Fox wants a better negotiating position, so they're trying to sabotage Disney's most lucrative property in order to make them more desperate.

Or, you know, maybe the movie just sucks.

I can PM what happens if you want.  It's definitely fans that are angry because they expected something and got something else.

I already read the last couple of paragraphs of the Wikipedia plot synopsis. I don't know what people were expecting if they weren't expecting that.

Iíll debate with you more once youíve seen the film, Diego.  A lot of what makes said scene work is in the execution.

What did you guys think of
Spoiler (hover to show)
?

Anyway, I liked the film. Might be better than TFA but I'll have to let it sit a bit. I applaud its ambition even if not every direction they take with the plot (and certain characters) pays off. Probably could've been trimmed by ten to fifteen minutes but I was entertained. I'm slowly settling in the B range.

Audience score was manipulated by bots.  The bots even spread to other movies:

I was waiting for Disney's hack lawyers to cook up some defamation scheme like this. Of course, it's pretty much the most obvious load of bullshit ever. Just looking at the reviews makes it extremely clear that each one was written by a different person. They refer to specific and unique plot points, have different grammatical styles, and even have profile pictures. Many of them have logged other movies.

There are also some five-star reviews for Star Wars accidentally posted on The Shape of Water, illustrating that it might be a problem with RT, or that people are just putting their reviews in the wrong place. Unless you're gullible enough to think the bots were also programmed to give out positive reviews. As far as I can see, the behavior of the one-star reviewers is not significantly more suspicious than the behavior of the five-star ones.

The real question, Moody, is how much did Disney pay you to make this post?
