Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
« on: December 01, 2017, 08:17:14 am »
Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri stars Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, Lucas Hedges, Kathryn Newton, Abbie Cornish, Samara Weaving, Caleb Landry Jones, Kerry Condon, Nick Searcy, and Clarke Peters. After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at Bill Willoughby, the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command, Officer Jason Dixon, an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle is only exacerbated.

Currently sitting at 94% on the Tomatometer. Official RT Critics Consensus: "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri deftly balances black comedy against searing drama -- and draws unforgettable performances from its veteran cast along the way."

This is one of the best films of the year. Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell give awards worthy performances and the script has arguably the best dialogue I've heard all year (I think it and Lady Bird are the most I've laughed during a 2017 film). It  can be a bit unfocused periodically but it's a consistently riveting work with complex characters, adept skill at balancing its tones, and excellent pacing. Probably an A.

Theater by my school doesn't have it, so I'm hoping it comes to my local theater back home or something. I do get to see Lady Bird tonight though, so not a total loss.

Glad to see you liked it. I was pleasantly surprised at how it steered clear of a lot of potential cliched moments. What did you think of Dixon's arc?

It's hard to pick a best part/scene (I presume you're either referring to the scene where he
