Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
« on: June 26, 2017, 10:39:43 pm »
Written, produced, and directed by Luc Besson, this adaptation of the French science fiction comics series Valerian and Laureline created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières stars Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, Rutger Hauer, John Goodman, Sam Spruell, Alain Chabat, Mathieu Kassovitz, Jonas Bloquet, Sand Van Roy, and Elizabeth Debicki. In the 28th century, Valerian and Laureline are special operatives charged with keeping order throughout the human territories. On assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two undertake a mission to Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis where species from across the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence, and culture. At the center of Alpha is a mysterious dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

One of my most anticipated movies of the year.  I love sci-fi epics like this.

While I didn't care for The Fifth Element or Lucy, I have faith in this. I'm too much of a sci-fi fan to not be excited.

Also... Cara Delevingne is a prime candidate to play Michelle Carter in the eventual biopic:

Visually, it looks incredible enough for me to consider paying theater price for it but I'm unsure whether those visuals take prominence over a worthwhile story. I'll probably end up waiting for the reviews to roll in (though that weekend Dunkirk is probably of greater priority for me).

I really want to believe in Besson, but everything I have seen of the story so far looks and sounds very underwhelming. Some of it is probably source material's age, but even so, it feels like such a waste of great visual design.

It's currently at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes with 12 reviews so far.
The reviews range from "great" to "worst film of the year". I'm sold.

David Ehrlich's review said watching it in 3D actually improved the experience. My interest is certainly rising.

I'm actually fairly excited for this now. Plus, I almost feel like it's my duty to support this movie as someone who appreciates original sci-fi.

Yeah, this is easily one of my most anticipated movies of the year.  I'm more excited for this than Dunkirk if I'm being completely honest (although I'm still pretty damn excited for it).
Goodbye!

Feel the same way. I think my whole family is planning to see it just to help make it a success.

I was expecting terrible reviews, so this is actually a pleasant surprise. Might see this now. I can barely remember the last time I saw a good sci-fi/action movie in theaters.

RT Consensus: "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets uses sheer kinetic energy and visual thrills to overcome narrative obstacles and offer a viewing experience whose surreal pleasures often outweigh its flaws."
