Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, the film stars Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Gil Birmingham, Jon Bernthal, Julia Jones, Kelsey Chow, Graham Greene, Martin Sensmeier, James Jordan, Eric Lange, Ian Bohen, Hugh Dillon, Matthew Del Negro, Teo Briones, and Tantoo Cardinal. US Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert discovers a body in the rugged wilderness of the Wind River Indian Reservation. The FBI sends in rookie agent Jane Banner, but she's unprepared for the difficulties created by the oppressive weather and isolation of the Wyoming winter. When she employs Cory as a tracker, the two venture deep into a world ravaged by violence and the elements.

 An FBI agent teams with a town's veteran game tracker to investigate a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation.

Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Hell or High Water) is apparently fed up with directors touching his western noir scripts and messing with their simplicity. This is just well crafted, tense, and bleak movie making and it works well. Elizabeth Olsen fits the character, she's gonna need a role that challenges her eventually but so far she's OK. The native american indian stuff is surprisingly tasteful for any audience, the natives are featured largely and have realistic problems. Jeremy Renner lets out his inner John Wayne in ways I didn't think he could. Overall it was a genuinely satisfying murder mystery with all the noir bite you expect from this writer. The hand held cam stuff was a little too noticeable sometimes but it works for the visceral, grim nature of the film. 8/10

The title and the premise reminds me of a Made-for-TV police drama I saw once, The Dark Wind. It had almost entirely Navajo cast, and began with a murder that also had something to do with water rights, I think. Don't really remember details of the plot, but it was alright, 5 or 6/10 kind of film. I still wonder how it wound up in an Australian library out of all the possible films out there.

The Big Sick was good, mostly due to the great performances and its ability to juggle tones very well. Despite my being conflicted on A Ghost Story I do want some more people here to see it just to hear their thoughts. You definitely need to go in blind for that one.

Thankfully The Big Sick came to my local theater this week, so I'll be seeing that tomorrow or Tuesday. I go back to school this weekend though, so I dunno what I'll be able to watch (the theater within walking distance doesn't get first run films, but hopefully I'll borrow friends' cars to go to the 12 screen theater 10-ish miles away this year).
