Best horror films of 2016
« on: January 02, 2017, 01:31:20 pm »
I'm mostly making this thread for suggestions (looking at you John Tyler, since Tanny and Chase are gone) since I have not seen nearly enough films from this year, and I honestly cannot think of a single great horror film that I saw in 2016.

Here's my list:
1. The Witch - 7/10
2. Don't Breathe - 7/10

....the rest aren't worth mentioning.

Have you seen Mike Flanagan's Hush? If so, I recommend it.

Just finished it.  Not bad, but nothing too special either.  This seems to be the worst year for film....possibly ever.

Yes. There have been a fair number of "good" movies this year, but not one that I would ever consider putting into my 100 favorite films list. 2014 and 2015 both added two films each, so this is unusual. There's been nothing above a low 8/10 in 2016 for me.

Nocturnal Animals was fantastic.

I'm with you there.  I just watched The Invitation which was more of a thriller than horror.  When it got into it I was very intrigued, and I was hoping to see the first truly "great" film of the year that I could fit into a top 100 list.  Unfortunately it ended up being kind of a wasted opportunity, though still good.  La La Land was also good, but nothing spectacular.

I still have a few more 2016 films to get through...here's to hoping that there's something special in there somewhere.  Up next:  The Shallows.

Fuck, I keep forgetting about that movie. Only place I can see it now is Berkeley... I might be able to do it. I feel like I'll regret it if I miss it in theaters.

Seeing Moonlight tomorrow, I think, and I'm still waiting on Silence. So I guess 2016 still has a chance to give me something good (though it would be funny if I ended up seeing the best movie of 2016 in 2017).

I was curious about The Shallows too. I might check it out if you or someone else on here says it's worth seeing. But I've heard it's a bit overdone.

Also, if you're still looking for good 2016 movies, try Hell or High Water or Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Though actually, the latter might not be your kind of movie...

I feel like it's more up my alley since I'm a fan of both Open Water (which it looks comparable to) and Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan<3).

I would also like to see Nocturnal Animals.  I put it off because Dylan said it was bad, but Dylan also loved Rogue One and hated Arrival, so who knows...I'll have to check that one out too.  I've found that Jake Gyllenhaal's presence is often enough to carry a film.  That can't be said for many actors...in fact, he's probably in my top 5 actors of all time.

Out of curiosity, what did Dylan rate each film respectively?

8.5 and 5, if I remember correctly.  So I guess love and hate are strong words.

Don't really remember, but I think so.  I didn't care too much for it.

If I were you, I'd see it.  I thought it was pretty damn great.

So anyway, my top 5 horror movies of the year would be:

1. The Witch
2. 10 Cloverfield Lane
3. The Shallows
4. Lights Out
5. Conjuring 2
Goodbye!

2. 10 Cloverfield Lane
I see that as more of a thriller, honestly.

...but if we're going to blur the line between thriller and horror, I suppose my list would resemble the following:

1. Green Room
2. 10 Cloverfield Lane
3. Don't Breathe

My list would probably be:

1. Don't Breathe
2. The Invitation
3. The Witch
4. Southbound (did this come out last year?)

Those are the ones I liked. Haven't seen too many unfortunately.

Oh, Southbound conquers all.  That's one of the best horrors I've seen this decade.  But I saw it in 2015 and it was my favourite film last year, so I can't really include it again.
