Anyone gonna watch that new Star Trek show?

Just realized it's coming out tonight. Don't know anything about it though. Should I be excited?

Eh. Didn't really look all that interesting, judging from the trailer.
Everything is terrible.

I saw a few of the episode titles on RT, and I thought they sounded pretty similar to the kinds of titles TOS episodes would have. Still, I won't watch it, at least not tonight. All Star Trek-related material made after 1991 is a disappointment to me. I don't see why this would be any different.

I kinda hate Picard. Haven't seen that film in years, though. I remember Cromwell being good in it.

I was never a big Picard fan, but I always found First Contact to be a top 5 Star Trek film tbh.

Holy shit, has anyone else watched this trailer? Forget anything I ever said about this that was remotely optimistic; this looks terrible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC7IMj7WFyE

So... even ignoring the horrible cover of that Ten Years After song (which is so overused now it's kinda funny), this looks pretty godawful. The narration is really, really generic, on the level of "I am with the Force, and the Force is with me." It's a bunch of platitudes that sound good but don't really mean anything. The production quality looks okay as far as sci-fi TV shows go, but it looks more like a Star Wars aesthetic than Star Trek.

The lead doesn't seem to have the right charisma for the series, either. And yeah, I've said that about pretty much everyone after Kirk, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But I maintain that Star Trek isn't all about cool spaceships and aliens and shit. It was about a very specific group of characters who Roddenberry created, and who were portrayed with pitch-perfect performances. No cast since then has been able to reproduce that chemistry. The dynamic between Kirk, Spock, and Bones is a lightning-in-a-bottle kind of magic that this show doesn't seem to be interested in even attempting to replicate. So much of this trailer is dedicated to showcasing visuals and special effects that A) Aren't all that impressive, and B) Shouldn't even be the main focus of the show.

Also... shoehorning Mudd into the show is about the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Some of these comments are pretty damn funny, though. I love Star Trek fans.

"I didn't mean to say that Discovery should be hauling garbage, I meant to say it should be hauled away AS garbage."

"#NotMyStarTrek"

"Boldly going in to cancellation faster than no trek series has gone before."

But then, of course, there are people calling it "feminist propaganda" and making comments about "forced diversity," which is honestly hilarious. Like... have you seen Star Trek TOS? Two Americans, an Asian (granted, born in SF, but whatever), a Russian, a black lady, a Scottish guy, and a Vulcan. When this fails, and it will, it will not be due to a diversity quota. It will be because the creators fundamentally misunderstood what this series is.

Maybe I should rewatch it. All the captains after Kirk come across as extremely stiff to me, but maybe that's just because I was raised on TOS. I will say that the Borg are one of the best things the franchise ever created. Perfect villain for a show that's all about individuality, different cultures, and freedom.

The whole controversy over it being too “SJW” boggled my fucking mind. Star Trek is known for being one of the most progressive franchises in history. Gene Roddenberry was as liberal as one could get in his era. Who are these fans that suddenly now have a problem with that? It’s like all the themes and messages went completely over their heads for decades.

This isn’t even the most diverse series Star Trek’s ever had. Star Trek Voyager was arguably “worse” in terms of “SJW”-ishness when it came to the cast.

I doubt that anyone complaining about this has watched a single episode of TOS. But this might turn into a referendum on the leading woman's performance, and if she's terrible (which she probably will be), people will say that she was cast simply because she's a black lady.

This show looks bad.  It looks more like Abrams Trek than anything else, with all the explosions and lens flares...

The overload of action in the trailer contrasts hilariously with the show's title. The franchise is all about discovery, exploration, and reaching out to new cultures. I have a feeling that the only things being discovered in this series will be new ways to make things go boom.

It could be a marketing ploy to fool non-Trekkies.

85% critics score on RT: "Although it takes an episode to achieve liftoff, Star Trek: Discovery delivers a solid franchise installment for the next generation -- boldly led by the charismatic Sonequa Martin-Green."

In contrast, the audience score is 47%.
Everything is terrible.

Well Danny, it seems that if that was the plan, it did not have the desired effect. Man, this series really has gone down the tubes.
