Girls Trip: 2/10

Lmao, talk about an exaggeration.
Or, ya know, maybe he didn't like it?

But 2/10 level?  The film wasn't that bad.  He's just being extra.  I'd mark the film around the Hangover.  Mediocre.  Not really funny and pretty dumb.  5/10

I didn't see it so I really can't comment on the quality. I'm just saying that it's John's opinion and maybe the movie just really didn't click with him and he hated it.

Yes, how dare I hate a painfully lazy and predictable comedy that's overlong, melodramatic, and barely funny.

This is such a blanket statement.  Why not get into the specifics on why you hated its comedy, why you hated its melodramatic moments, etc.?

What else can I say about the comedy other than I didn't find it funny, with the exception of the golden shower scene which surprisingly did manage to get a chuckle out of me. It's just so lazy. It wants to be shocking but everything is so paint-by-numbers, pedestrian, and toothless that there are no surprises to be found. It stuns me that a film like this is a smash hit while something as creative and exciting as Valerian is bombing. I also thought the filmmakers did a terrible job at balancing the funny moments with dramatic moments. As I said, it's predictable and lacking in any bite, so you really don't care what happens, and the characters themselves are boring and bland, so you're not invested in what situations they go through (some of their issues aren't even fully explored). The dramatic moments are more mawkish than anything else. The direction is flat and visually uninteresting, which is no shock because the same can be said for every other unfunny studio comedy. As for the acting, I liked Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah. They all did fine. Tiffany Haddish was very annoying. I'm sorry, but loud and obnoxious does not equal funny. I also admired its message about female empowerment and the power of friendship. I just wish it had an actually good film to accompany it.

Finally saw Children of Men. It's a masterpiece that ages like wine, and it goes without saying that the cinematography and acting are fantastic. It's a shame Clive Owen's career has been on the decline since this film because his performance in particular carried much of the film. I have some very mild nitpicks but I think this is probably worth a high A if not an A+.

Top ten film for me. Just a marvel of cinema.

It's probably somewhere in my top 25 as of now. Its ability to balance its viscerality with emotion and a genuinely affecting redemption arc was masterful. Cuaron will probably never top this.
