All right now... anyone else seen The Assignment starring Michelle Rodriguez?
*raises hand*

Can you tell me who the hell thought that this:

was a good idea?
As for who thought it was a good idea: Walter Hill, the film's writer and director who also directed 48 Hrs. and helped write the original Alien.

It's funny how so many people complain that Michelle Rodriguez looks too manly yet when she plays a man in this movie, it's extremely unconvincing.

I mean, if they really wanted to do this premise (not sure why, but okay), they should've had two people play the role. Then the surgery would've seemed even more radical and freaky. Just get an actor and an actress who look even a little bit like each other. As it was, the change didn't seem all that weird, simply because the character in the beginning of the movie was so obviously Michelle Rodriguez with a fake beard and what I assume was a CGI dick.

Aside from that... what the hell was this movie? Tony Shalhoub and Sigourney Weaver were in this. Did someone hold their families for ransom or something? That exposition in the beginning was so fucking bad...

Also, this is the 100th film I've seen that was released this year.

The top ten of my 2016 standings list has gotten a late addition. Just saw The Salesman and thought it was pretty fantastic.

In a Shyamalan-esque way.

Watched Schindler's List for the first time last night, pretty great movie. By no means is it fun to watch, but it's a remarkable story and quite powerful.

Just as an aside, this is the type of film that I have no idea how to rank on my top 100.

So I finally watched Split. I'm a bit torn on some aspects but I think it's a decent enough thriller.

Some thoughts:
McAvoy was just as solid as everyone's been saying. Anya Taylor-Joy holds her own as well. Hopefully she gets more roles without being too typecast.

- The minimalist cinematography is a nice touch. It certainly helps with the claustrophobic tone it aims to settle for.

- The final act helped carry the film for me. I felt it dragged a bit during the second act. Not quite sure why this is the case.

- Most people have already pointed this out but the other two girls are absolutely expendable on account of a lack of development. I had little reason to care for them.
- Some of the flashbacks could have been cut out
- The twist will please the most dedicated of Shyamalan's fans.

I'm not settled on a score yet but a B-/B would probably be appropriate here.

Great film. Is this your first Farhadi film?

Indeed it is. I might see A Separation sometime as well if I can get it from Netflix.

Watched Neill Blomkamp's short film Rakka and I was very impressed by it. This definitely isn't Chappie Blomkamp.
