Despite already being aware of many of its notorious scenes, Birdemic was still a hilarious watch.

I watched The Lives of Others last night. Really great film about the Stasi and the persecution of "intellectuals" under communist regimes. Ulrich Muhe gives an amazing lead performance. I recommend this one.

Andrei Rublev was a tough watch with its three hour runtime and the slow pace characteristic of Tarkovsky (which I appreciate his naturalist directing style and the careful use of score to emphasize the contemplative moments, although it can be maddening at times), but it proved to be very rewarding by the end. It's a religious film at its core, the character study second. It probably has the most humane representation of faith that I've ever seen, along with some more philosophical ramblings about the themes of artist vs authority, and it was surprisingly explicit for its time, risks that Tarkovsky sure as hell took to more or less recreate the turbulent historical setting. Also, it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Probably better than Solaris, but Stalker is still on top.

Huh. I was considering taking a look at that movie since it's on Redbox. Pros and cons?

There isn't too much to say other than it failed to entice me outside of scenes involving the production of the film they were making.  It's well made, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
Goodbye!

The Big Sick was awesome, with a 50/50-esque (by that I mean perfect) blend of humor and emotional heft. Great script and characters, as well as strong performances from all involved. I'm not entirely sure how someone could dislike this movie- 9/10. Still a terrible title for a movie though.

Which performance was your favorite? I honestly have to go with Ray Romano's character. I can sympathize with his struggles in articulation at times.

Honestly, all four leads were great, but I think I have to go with Kumail as the lead. I just found him so charismatic and funny.

He's probably the runner up for me. He showed promising range as an actor and I hope to see him in more films in the future.

I think he's definitely gotten better as Silicon Valley has gone along as well, with his performance here really showing what he can do. I also really hope to see him in future films.

Detroit was good. While it felt long (I think solely focusing on the Algiers incident might have made it feel more focused), I think Bigelow did an admirable job recreating the emotionally draining events of that event. Will Poulter was quite intimidating as someone who, while having his predjudices, is basically a man whose perception of the law extends to everyone but him. John Boyega doesn't have a tremendous amount of screentime but I think he effectively conveyed much emotional restraint. I feel that a B+ is an accurate score, though that may change if I think about it.
