Blade Runner 2049 was probably even better the second time around. Some of my nitpicks still stand but the score is growing on me, the film always maintained my investment, and despite my knowing what happened I got more emotional during the ending. My friends loved it too, except for one who claimed it was a 7/10 on account of its pacing (which is probably more due to personal preference than anything).

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was... a bit disappointing, honestly. From a visual perspective the sheer imagination and fluidity put into the animation is undeniably commendable, but I feel that the film was a bit too unfocused for its own good at times. Many of the film's themes would be meditated on with more moral complexity (i.e. Princess Mononoke) and care in Miyazaki's later films. The film is admittedly blunt from a exposition perspective and the ending was rather anticlimactic (I get that only Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke and probably The Wind Rises are the most dark/earnest thematically but it would have been nice to have seen the film continue with the gamble it was attempting to pull). Still though, it's quite well paced and I was invested in the characters.

I'm settling on a B- for this.

Geostorm: 8/10

Itís goofy as hell and I honestly donít expect anyone here to enjoy it as much as I did, but I was weirdly invested in it despite its silliness.

Whatever Works 2/10 Another old man with 40 years younger woman romance from Woody Allen. Gross. This movie was pretty offensive honestly. It's got a coastal liberal elitist mindset in which every Southerner is incredibly stupid and it takes a trip to Progressive New York City to rid them of their backwards religious convictions and turn them into enlightened polyamorists and homosexuals. Blow me. This movie also features a scene in which characters walk into a room filled with wax sculptures of the presidents and Donald Trump is there among Bush, Lincoln, and Reagan. How did he know???

Geostorm 4/10 A Roland Emmerich film through and through even though he wasn't involved with this one. Watch for Gerard Butler's changing beard length due to obvious reshoots.

Blade Runner: Final Cut - tentative 8/10

I definitely see what people are talking about when they say this movie's dream-like.  The atmosphere and imagery on display was downright delicious, overlong or not.

It has a similar problem I get with other hyped-up classics where I kinda expect the story to have more than what it actually has.  This happened with Ghost in the Shell.  This happened with The Matrix.  And it kinda happens here.

My problem isn't that the story's simpler than I expected.  I actually appreciated that.  It felt more focused that way.  My problem was that it just felt like certain relationships weren't given as much time as they should've been.  And I'm not actually referring to Rachael and Deckard when I say that.  I think it was a bigger problem with Deckard and Roy.  When the two confront each other at the end he acts like he knows who Deckard is, but they never so much as saw each other before this, let alone interacted.  And I think the story was in sore need of a scene or two that did that, because the climax would've hit home so much more if it did.  Especially where Roy's speech is concerned.

The stuff with Rachel was...okay.  She loses all perception of who she is, Deckard starts doubting who he is, and the two are driven together by crisis and uncertainty.  Fine and dandy as movie romances go.  I get why the love scene was controversial.  It's definitely a bit uncomfortable, but I don't think it's as bad or "rapey" as other people make it out to be.

As for everything else, I guess I kinda wish the replicants got a bit more development, but on the other hand the ambiguity on their end adds some mystique to who they are and what their kinda exactly is so I'm willing to let it slide there.  They had a relatable motivation and a goal and that's all they really needed.

Despite all the **** I'm giving this film, I still really liked it.  It didn't feel as incomplete or erratic as Ghost in the Shell.  It didn't feel as contrived or stupidly simplistic as The Matrix.  I loved the pacing, the score, the setting, and the atmosphere, and despite whatever misgivings I have with the characters, they're still memorable and likeable enough to hold the movie together.  That's my take anyways.

Now to move on to 2049.

Eventually.
