After watching the new Mr. Rogers documentary, I wondered what would happen if I applied his methods to the worst site on the internet. The response was as predictable as it was depressing.

Spoiler (hover to show)

The Mr. Rogers documentary is very close to being my favorite of the year.  I'd give Annihilation a slight edge though.  I loved it.
What would your top five or ten for 2018 look like so far?

1. Annihilation
2. Won't You Be My Neighbor?
3. Paddington 2
4. Hereditary
5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
6. Tully
7. Incredibles 2
8. Thoroughbreds
9. Unsane
10. A Quiet Place
Goodbye!

The Castle of Cagliostro is a breezy action piece with endearing characters and nice visuals. Check it out to see where Hayao Miyazaki got his start.

Moody was right about Sicario 2. Real fucking piece of shit.

Also, now that John has raised his score of Solo to a 9 an edit with Dylan and Moody could also work.

Interestingly, we actually have a Доброчан, which is literally "kindness chan". Apparently, they ARE for real, to the point they engage in reverse trolling where they send well-wishes to the "target". You should try posting something there and see what happens (politely, or they'll think you are a stray 4channer and ban). After all, pretty much everyone there is bound to understand English to at least intermediary level, and many probably understand some Japanese as well.

Ironically, I found out about it through browsing Lurkmore, which began as a wiki of the original (Russian) 2ch (Двач/Dvach). Said Lurkmore is probably not as bad as 4chan itself, but damn, it is close. The main difference is that it is considerably less racist, in large part because the whole "white purity" bullshit automatically excludes practically all Russians. (In fact, it savagely mocks our Neo-Nazis/Neo-Pagans; the way pretty much all their leaders here happen to be homos also helps with that.) However, it's often ridiculously misogynistic; whereas 4chan would quote the hadiths justifying wife-beating as a reason to "remove kebab", there, it's quoted as a good thing. I suppose this may be an inevitable development for trolls when male-female gender ratios are as skewed as ours; the other explanations are even more depressing.

I'm embarrassed by how much 4Chan lingo I know these days, but I can't help checking up on that site every time Trump does something big. It fascinates me to watch their justifications for his actions. They've accomplished some insane mental gymnastics-- they avidly proclaim their own racial superiority, then make fun of "SJWs" who call the alt-right racist. And yeah, I've seen a lot of posts calling Slavs "Mongoloids" and "not real whites," so that part rings true. Going off of what you said, I'm curious to see if more of these people start converting to Islam, because the very things they critique about it (sexism, homophobia, etc) align perfectly with their own worldviews.

Well, here's a really long, and underseen Quora answer which is mainly about alt-right's positive attitude towards anime and Japan. At the end, though, it links to at least 4 cases where Neo-Nazis collided with Islam (including two in Germany) - and converted in all four, predictably going straight to jihadism. If that's not a proof that fucked-up people will always seek out the ideology to justify themselves, I don't know what is.

Speaking of John, any thoughts on the symbolism in his latest Twitter profile revamp?

How recent is the banner? If his changing it was synonymous with July 4th then it could be some sort of commentary about the US. I presume he would emphasizing the immigration situation and the Supreme Court since those are the hot-button issues of the week, and probably try to illustrate that current arguments regarding those issues run in a circle. Of course, that could just be my English inclinations practicing before AP Lit in the fall.

As for his username and profile, I don''t think there's an explicit intent. He's been a fan of notorious actors like William Shatner, Nic Cage, etc. for a while, and has rotated over the top reactions as profile pictures before. Of course, you might have picked up on things I haven't.

Kashmir, this post feels about as genuine as John's 3/10 to BvS. No offence, but your regular need to demonstrate yourself as the only sane man and the arbiter of balance is tiringly predictable at this point. You know I've had mixed feelings about the particulars of your politics for a while, (and I've actually started to give Trump and his supporters more of the benefit of a doubt, mainly due to economy and what seems like Korea rapproachment). Even for me, these appeals to what I presume is centrist civility and impartiality feel eerie disconnect right now.

Simply put, having a president known for this even before he took office is not normal. Even if we assume the historical perspective makes Trump look better when placed alongside Clinton, H.W. Bush and/or Kennedy, it's still strikingly abnormal for most democratic leaders in history. (and many undemocratic ones as well.) Granted, a wife of a past president becoming one later on is strikingly abnormal as well (and Zimbabwe had a coup last year to prevent just that.), and there would have been similar-grade jokes about this as well.

I guess I am just saying I find it all strange to relate to. I have read a while ago that for most people, being "moderate" or "centrist" means having a mix of comparatively strong positions on both sides of the political spectrum, and personal experience certainly bears this out. Centrist as being detached from every issue or attached to the "middle" of it is something hardly anyone holds, especially as the existence of Overton windows makes this position nonsensical.

If you want an impressive lead performance and some decent visual flourishes get pummeled by obvious metaphoric telegraphing (especially by the title), frustrating writing, especially with regards to the characters and loose plot ends, and roughly three different endings (some of which contradict each other), then Beast is the film for you.

I wouldn't consider myself to be the type of pretentious pseudo-centrist who espouses the horseshoe theory and so on. I suppose I just appear that way on account of being somewhat burned out by partisanship in the country and never feeling the need to box myself up with a certain ideology or party. If you would like for me to discuss a few current political positions so as to dispel the notion of my being an dispassionate fence sitter I can do so.

As for the film's quote itself, I wasn't intending on defending Trump's actions with my post. I just find current Trump jokes to be weak comedic crutches and/or weak appeals to viewers of a certain persuasion to sell the product as more intelligent. His not being a moral paragon is no revelation, and as such I don't necessarily need to watch The First Purge to validate that.

John debunks the film's praise yet again.

Does anyone actually see these films?

Most of them are enjoyable if stupid.  The new one is the first one I’d call legitimately good, because this time it’s far more well-directed than any of the preceding 3 and has characters that I gave a shit about.  There’s still some clunky writing in there, but that’s to be expected.
Goodbye!
