Dang. I thought Okja would squeak out a win, but the widespread punching bag status of The Circle makes sense in retrospect.

I surprised myself this year. I went back to my old tendency to not "spread around" worst awards, giving the prizes only to the films that really, really deserved them. The Circle has netted an astounding number of worst awards just by the virtue of how many individual parts of it failed.

I very seriously considered giving this award to Lady Macbeth. But in the end Iíve got to go with my heart. Perhaps itís because I can relate so much to Lady Bird at this very specific time in my life, but I found this movie to be emotionally honest, heartwarming, and unfailingly genuine. It captures life in California better than most films made about my home state, and its endlessly funny script doesnít get any less potent on a second viewing. With this, we continue the tradition of giving Best Picture awards to films that prominently feature religion-- as well as Saoirse Ronan. And despite the fact that Iím writing these before the Oscars, I think I can safely (and sadly) predict that Iíve once again chosen a winner that didnít do well at the Academy Awards. So Iím not losing my touch!
