I found the characters in H4 to be a lot more likeable and interesting, and I thought the story was much better-written.
Everything is terrible.

The Da Vinci Code
Of course, it patronizes the religious and makes them look like heretics...

What did you not like about the characters in Hostel?  They were pretty realistic..

They were razor-thin and the two leads, Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson), weren't really all that likeable (although Hernandez does turn in a solid performance), so I found it hard for me to feel bad for them when bad things happen to them in the movie.
Everything is terrible.

John....that's retarded.  The entire point of the first half of the movie is for you to hate the main characters, and they aren't any more "razor-thin" than you.

I saw it as we see the main characters and Eli Roth wants me to like them and I don't like them.

All right, maybe one day, I'll watch it again with the "the whole point is for you to hate the characters" thing in mind.

John..I've seen the film several times and the director's commentary twice.  One of the biggest themes in the movie is the ignorance and selfishness of America's youth, and the majority of the film builds on that.  The guys are complete **** assholes, they're literally just going around trying to get laid, completely indifferent on the culture surrounding them.  Paxton starts to evolve as a person after seeing how cruel the world can be, but we don't really start to feel for him until the moment he decides to go back and save the Asian girl.  If you legitimately thought that Eli Roth was trying to create likable lead characters then you missed the entire point of the film.
