Consensus IX: The Coen Brothers
« on: February 19, 2016, 07:49:30 pm »
Previous.

Should be self-explanatory by this point. I figured we'd do a Coen Brothers installment in honor of Hail, Caesar, so I picked a handful of their films to vote on. We can do a Part II if y'all want to see other films up here.

The Big Lebowski: 100%
Funny, quotable, and wildly unpredictable, The Big Lebowski is a film that deserves its cult status.

Channing Tatum: +
John Tyler: +
Jeff Goldblum: +
Caleb Paasche: +
Rupert Bryant- A User Whose Opinion I Respect Because He Likes The Critically Acclaimed Film The Big Lebowski: +
Bread: +
Frank: +

Fargo: 100%
The Coen Brothers' dark comedy classic is shocking and hilarious in equal measure, featuring a starmaking turn by Frances McDormand as a pregnant cop with a thick Minnesota accent. Oh jeez.

(9 votes)
Diego Tutweiller: +
Channing Tatum: +
John Tyler: +
Jeff Goldblum: +
Johnny Kashmir: +
Caleb Paasche: +
Rupert Bryant- A User Whose Opinion I Respect Because He Likes The Critically Acclaimed Film The Big Lebowski: +
Bread: +
Frank: +

O Brother Where Art Thou: 88%
Although the actions of a certain male stripper (who shall remain nameless) have doomed this film to not receive the 100% it so richly deserves, O Brother Where Art Thou is one of the best entries in the Coens' canon. I mean... come on, guys. I can't think of anything bad to say about this movie.

Channing Traitor: -
John Tyler: +
Jeff Goldblum: +
Robert Neville: +

True Grit: 57%
True to the original while not compromising its gritty new vision, the Coen Brothers' True Grit nevertheless becomes bogged down in a structurally concrete plot to warrant any thrills or scares, creating a predictable and stuffed film, that doesn't seem to become grounded in it's craft. This results in a incoherent plot points with creepy things to stay glue to.

No Country For Old Men: 100%
Although it violates thermodynamics almost regularly, No Country For Old Men is still a deft, legitimately entertaining film with good characters and stuff.

(10 votes)
Diego Tutweiller: A very tentative +

Raising Arizona: 100%
Featuring the Coen Brothers in fine early form, as well as one of the finest performances by Nicholas "Christ" Cage of all time, Raising Arizona is a quirky, funny, and genuine film about parenting.

(6 votes)
Diego Tutweiller: +
Channing Tatum: +
John Tyler: +
Jeff Goldblum: +

Barton Fink: 100%
Another Coen Brothers movie with 100%. Yawn.

(5 votes)
Diego Tutweiller: +
Channing Tatum: +
John Tyler: +
Jeff Goldblum: +
Frank: +

Hail, Caesar: 67%
Hail, Caesar! is one of the Coens' lesser outings; the production quality is stunning, but the laughs are only sporadic.

Channing Tatum: +
John Tyler: +
Nicholas Moody: +
Jeff Goldblum: -
Johnny Kashmir: +

+ For Fargo, Hail Caesar, and No Country. How many of the rest are on Netflix?

The previous consensus results make me sad...

+ for The Big Lebowski, No Country and Fargo (barely). Inside Llewyn Davis too, but that doesn't count I guess.

Which one of these is your favorite of theirs? I myself am torn between No Country and Llewyn Davis.

This score is too low in my opinion. Was the ending just not your cup of tea?

I dunno, I'll have to, uh, watch it again, actually. Huh, it's funny, weren't, um, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac both in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, too?  :D
