Rupert reviews Mute
« on: April 14, 2018, 07:17:26 pm »
Hey guys, I wrote a full review of Duncan Jones' Mute, it would mean a lot if you guys would read it and tell me what you think, both in terms of the review itself and of the movie. The review contains very mild spoilers, but I'd say it's okay to read even if you haven't watched the movie. Thanks in advance.

Rupert - I haven't seen that particular film.  However, I'll look over your review either tomorrow night after I get back from the movies or Monday - got caught up in a variety of things today in between watching Iron Man 3, so wasn't able to get to it.

Haven't seen the film, but strong review overall! Just as a pointer, I'd try to use the passive voice a bit less (personally don't mind it, but I know that's a piece of feedback I've received in the past), but a good review for sure!

Thanks Caleb! You're right about the passive voice, I did use it too much. I'm going to work on that for my next review.

Agree with what Paaaasche said.  Too many "I", "we", "the viewer" type of qualifiers.

For example, I'd replace this:  "The viewer can clearly understand why Leo and this character can relate to each other" with something like this..."It is clearly understandable why Leo and this character can relate to each other".

"A failure of epic proportions" might be a bit overstated.  Unless they poured hundreds of millions of dollars into it, or were posturing it as their "tent pole" film to associate with Netflix, I doubt it will have that type of catastrophic effect on Netflix.  No need to embellish.

Other than those items, good review (even though I haven't seen the film.

One note that popped in my head while reading this:
"Skarsgård plays the introverted misfit Leo with an odd combination of childlike innocence and hulking physicality"
* Sounds a lot like Lenny from Of Mice and Men

Thanks for the feedback! I like your replacement sentence - it sounds a lot better. I figured it was a pretty huge failure because of its large budget and how negative the reviews were, but I could have dialed it back a bit for sure. As to Leo being similar to Lenny, I didn't think of that, but it makes a lot of sense. Leo is maybe a bit smarter and more self-aware, but the comparison definitely works.

No problem - glad I could help!

Haven't seen the film, but this was a solid review.  Makes me kind of intrigued to see the it, even though I don't think I'm going to like it a whole lot.

Thank you! Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if you gave it a 0/10 or something, but check it out nonetheless!

As long as Spielberg didn't direct it, it should be a little higher...
