Sicario (2015) Spoiler Free Review

Since I'm the first to see this film, I thought I'd share my thoughts on it with those who don't frequent Letterboxd.

Sicario is my pick for the best thriller since David Fincher's Zodiac. This is an incredibly tense and ominous film with strong performances from it's excellent cast, gorgeous cinematography by Roger Deakins, and flawless direction from Denis Villeneuve.

The stand out performers are Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro. Blunt is the moral center of the film, while Del Toro is a murky mix of having your sympathy while you being terrified by him. He's a calm, deadly killer, yet shows brief flashes of humanity, and he plays the role perfectly. Especially in the chilling climax, which focuses completely on him. Josh Brolin and the supporting cast are all very good as well. There is not a single misstep in acting or casting.

As I said, this is a very tense film. It had my stomach in knots for most of the run time. Much is owed to the menacing score. And of course the tight editing and amazing sound design. I see multiple technical Oscars in this film's future. The film's opening scene sets up what kind of film it's gonna to be, and never lets up. Of course, what would you expect from an R-rated thriller about the cartel? There are two major set pieces in the film, and they are both extremely effective in making you sweat. The final scene in the film is truly haunting, and when you see it, you'll understand why. This is a film that will stick with you after you leave the theater.

I highly recommend Sicario to anyone who loves a well crafted thriller. It is one of the very best films this year. 10/10.
