The But Game

Here's a list I started a few months ago on Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/oldeststreamer/list/the-but-game/

As long time listeners to the BBC's Kermode and Mayo's Film Review will no doubt remember Mark Strong was discussing the "with" and "and" credits concept and suggested there should be a "but" for those actors who appear to have wondered in from another film or singlehandedly manage to ruin it

Any suggestions?

Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's has been a subject of much discussion on this site. John hates it quite a bit. While I love Audrey Hepburn, I did just have to remove the film from my Top 100 list due to the addition of Come and See. A shame...

Anyway, in terms of actors who almost singlehandedly ruined films... some will disagree with me, but I have to say James Franco and Kirsten Dunst in the Raimi Spider-Man films. They had their moments, but those two performances are the main reasons why I haven't revisited those movies in years. I still love that trilogy to death, though, so they didn't really ruin it.

If we're talking about performances that actually succeeded in significantly lowering a film's quality, the entire supporting cast of Independence Day has to take the prize. Specifically Vivica A. Fox and the president's wife.

I think if they're collectively awful, that doesn't count on the basis of the Mark Strong formula!
