Binged an old GameStop gift card last week
« on: April 05, 2016, 11:01:44 am »
They were having a buy 2 get 1 free deal, and I snagged Skyrim, Alien Isolation, and Aliens: Colonial Marines for X-Box 360.

I started off with Skyrim, and..... I don't think I'll be leaving my house for a while.

Eh. Isolation is the only there that sounds great. I know Cutler played it and wasn't too impressed, but even our veteran gamers at Riot Pixels, who worship Fallout 2 like nothing before or since, have liked it a lot. (Though last year's SOMA seems to have edged it out by the general consensus.)

With Colonial Marines, even a simple video tells you why it's not a good purchase, or a good game in general. As for Skyrim, I've already played Oblivion rather heavily 5-6 years ago, only to forget about it completely once I got Dragon Age: Origins. Skyrim's just more casual version of that game.

My problem with Isolation was that it's a great game... for like the first 40 minutes.  Then it starts getting repetitive and the Xenomorphs are just too good.

And Skyrim is fun and I'm not too keen on dungeons and dragons.  But killing an ice dragon has got to be one of the more epic moments in a video game.

But for me, I'm waiting for one game...

goodbye!

I got Colonial Marines as the free game. The friends I've talked to about it are pretty mixed on it, so I thought I'd get it just to try it out, since I wasn't paying anything for it.

Alien: Isolation was freaking phenomenal.

The difficulty is insane and the Xenomorph still scared me every damn time.

Well, I heard the multiplayer is at least half decent, so I hope you have fun with that.

Colonial Marines made me so angry that I broke my Xbox 360 controller. Even the first level is impossible to complete, even on Easy.

Wait what? To my knowledge, Colonial Marines is hated for being too easy.

Then again, I was twelve. I haven't even touched the case in about three years.

I haven't played the previous Uncharteds (well, I got the third one through a bundle when buying PS3, but playing on its own it is a bit pointless when PS4 has the collection of all three.), but even so, it looks excellent. It seems to have practically everything I would want in that kind of game: there are even minor dialogue options in some cutscenes!

And technically, Dragon Age is not DnD: it's a separate fantasy setting that's closer to The Witcher (darker tone, elves are weak and oppressed (and that's great)), with magic Circles like in Wheel of Time and other notable differences. The "golden age" CRPGs of late 90's- early 2000's are almost all Dnd, though, besides the Fallouts, Arcanum and KOTOR.

I agree DnD is not a particularly interesting setting, and the only one of those that interests me is Planescape:Torment, simply because it's still regularly considered the best-written game ever made, and nearly everyone who's played it considers it the best RPG of all time. Immediately following it with last year's The Age of Decadence would make for an interesting comparison.

In that case, it must be Chris Bores' favorite game.

Didn't they add on some downloadable content that improved the single-player mode? I got it used, so I don't know if it's still available...

I play as a Nord (frost-resistant) so ice dragons are one of my easier opponents. Fire dragons are really difficult, though - when I encounter one, I run to the nearest giant camp on my map (hopefully one I haven't cleared) and let them dish it out for me.

Skyrim is entertaining but it's easy as fuck. I hear Isolation is good and scary.
