We're one post in, and already Jed has garnered a dumb rating.

Make that two.

As for underrated games, I'll go with games that didn't get the recognition they deserved nowadays.

OK, I guess Blood makes sense - I heard some enthusiastic praise for it from the few people who played it back in the day, though I don't really care for it that much. World in Conflict - well, it got 87% from ag.ru, but everyone seems to have forgotten it now, so I guess it is underrated. But Wolfenstein: The New Order?! Seriously? It's the best FPS of 2014 according to pretty much all the people who are worth listening on this subject, so how is it underrated? If I return back to RP GOTY Poll for 2014, it got 2nd best game of the year, best action game, best sequel/prequel, and even 4th best music, 5th best storytelling (lol), and 9th best visuals. Yes, it got overshadowed by DOOM at the moment, but so were a lot of games.

Just saw this thread again. You know, I never played Shadow the Hedgehog, and I know it's mocked a lot, but Jed does have a point it doesn't receive enough credit. As in, it turns out very few, if any, games, have ever been as non-linear as that one.

It still amazes me that this was done in a game about cartoon hedgehogs, whose players obviously didn't give a ****. I can think of so many RPGs or more conventional action-adventure games where this would have been right at home.

Well, I certainly like these.

I actually have that one as well. My brother used to play it a lot, and me not so much. Wouldn't say it's underrated, though: it's a decent RTS, and it largely got the sort of decent reception it deserved. As far as similar games go, Generals: Zero Hour and Dawn of War: Dark Crusade are both a lot more fun: less focus on the superunits, and far more interesting and distinct regular units with unique abilities.

I've never seen or heard of this.  Interesting.  Some of the games I would consider underrated are...

F.E.A.R.
F.E.A.R. Files
Lego Star Wars Clone Wars
Singularity
Army of Two
Army of Two 40th Day

F.E.A.R.
F.E.A.R. Files
Lego Star Wars Clone Wars
Singularity
Army of Two
Army of Two 40th Day

The original F.E.A.R. has a pretty strong following in Russia. Nevertheless, the original is still considered by many to be the unrivalled example of how AI in shooter games should be done, and people seem to like it more than many of Western GOTY shooters. I thought that might have been just Riot Pixels, with their very specific readers, but our equivalent of Metacritic also confirms it. Here are the ratings of both for

F.E.A.R itself

original Halo

Halo 2 (the other 4 Halos all have 82-85 on the former and NA/64/70 on the latter)

Killzone 2

Killzone 3

Resistance 2 (no score on RP)

Pretty much only the Half-Lives and Gears of War are better rated as far as "normal" shooters go. Well, that, and Metro and first two Modern Warfares are also close.

As for Singularity, it got some criticism for being like Bioshock, but more linear and less authentic, with poorly spelt Russian, etc. Though, I suppose a world where "we won" did appeal to some, even if we had to be the bad guys. I think the only other games that showed an alternate ending to Cold War, and in a decent light, were a shitty visual novel from 10 years ago, and Nuclear Union, where we sort of "won" Word War 3 by still having some 16 (underground) cities left by 2012, 50 years after the war. The 2012 trailer showing this still send shivers down the spine despite the deeply outdated graphics.

The original concept also intended for the protagonist to actually be the nuclear pilot who "won" said war and then got put into stasis, or something. However, this was being developed by an Ukrainian team, and so it fell apart in 2014 for obvious reasons.

F.E.A.R. Files is an extension of the original F.E.A.R.  You should really check it out if you get the chance.  Gears of War is one of my favorites as well, but I have a hard time classifying it as "underrated".  It's very well known and revered.  The most recent Gears 4 is not as strong as some of the earlier entries though.

As to Singularity, I didn't feel it was anything like BioShock - much more of straight up FPS whereas Bioshock has more RPG elements to it imo.  It's certainly more linear just by being more of a FPS game, so I don't really get that criticism so much because CoD, DOOM, GoW, F.E.A.R., Halo, etc are all even more linear than Singularity.  But I thought the story in Singularity was pretty good, the weapons were strong, the gameplay was smooth, and there were plenty of little "extras" to find.  i also thought the time travel elements were really cool as well.  Can't really comment on the Russian in it because I played it like 4 years ago so I don't really remember if it was crap or not.  I would honestly compare Singularity more to Wolfenstein 2009 than anything else...and I LOVED that game (it's better than Singularity).
