I'm more than halfway through Heavy Rain, and it's so fucking dumb.

I am not even sure what pisses me off the most about it by now: dialogues that do not change anything even when you are allowed to say something yourself (only action scenes seem to have an effect), its overall backwardness compared to Life is Strange (two static cameras are worse than LiS over-the shoulder one in most cases, and "thoughts" basically do the same thing as "Look" command in LiS, but much worse: you often have to awkwardly stall if you want to see them all (your own thoughts[/b]), there are fewer of them in general, and levels feel dead and artificial relative to LiS because there are way fewer interactive objects), or indeed, the idiotic plot where no-one bothers to talk about the most obvious things, dialogue is actually pretty bad even when it's preset (I absolutely hate all the bullshit Ethan and Madison are forced to say to each other) and its addiction to starting all the non-Ethan scenes out of context and then ending them with all kinds of bullshit action stuff.

Anyway, I am now at the point where Ethan has to shoot a guy (or not), and I wonder who I care about less. I absolutely do not care what happens to Ethan (I just grabbed the first sharp thing I could for the previous trial, and did not  even bother searching for antiseptic or whatever before cutting), I guess I shouldn't shoot that guy, and I do sorta want to save the kid (at least he wasn't as annoying as his autistic red balloon brother). However, I am not sure if I want to bother with whatever stuff I'll have to do to allow Ethan to save Shaun if I do not shoot the guy. Decisions!

* Also, I heard who the real killer was years before I finally got to it now, and I suppose that does detract from experience. Still, in good stories you notice the details foreshadowing the twist. In Heavy Rain, you just notice how it throws random cliched red herrings at you, hardly even bothering to establish their connection with the murders.

Now, I am Scott. I just cooked the steaming yellowish mass of protein that passes for scrambled eggs for Lauren, but she ran off with the typewriter client list and the origami magazines.

I do nothing but sit and wait, listening to the rain. I am hoping she figures it out now. I am hoping the charade will end. I already let the police have all the fingerprints they needed, yet it was still not enough. How long must the torment go?

Now we have a flashback to another kid. Is this young Shelby? At least then it wouldn't feel so indulgent.

This flashback seems intentionally tailored to make us lose any and all sympathy for that dumbass.

Stopped for now right as that "chapter" ended. I think I have about 10 more to go, starting from a second nightclub/party sequence, so I ought to finish this thing tomorrow. I suppose the only slightly interesting thing left now is how the Kramers actually figure into this. I am guessing that Scott is investigating Kramer's son in order to
Spoiler (hover to show)
, but that doesn't quite explain everything. I am eager to see the explanation from the minds behind that scrapyard fight, or indeed, those motorway/powerplant sequences.

Just got STALKER: Call of Pripyat on Steam.  Wonder if I'll enjoy this one, though.

Haven't played either yet, but it's fun how both of these have a history with our Ag.ru / riotpixels.com critics. Stalker as a whole has been a cult game in Russia, and its main reviewer (the one who despises MGS, and now largely retired from reviewing to do translations) was already infamous for not liking the original much. (Some casual game about 3 blind mice briefly became a meme after it came out same week and got a higher score.) Then, the preceding add-on, Clear Skies was so bugged upon release they actually coded the review text to become corrupted and display "download patch" error messages as you read it.

Hotline Miami also became a meme after another reviewer (who dislikes most non-board games in general) utterly hated it (30%), and people have been referring to this review to this day. Then, two guys here made a troll version of it called Bloodbath Kavkaz where you played as Chechen terrorist, got missions from a guy in Putin mask and had a "Maidan" level. It was utterly broken trash, but it worked, and they now became semi-famous and seem to be making quite a bit of money publishing other people's trash on Steam.

The "debate" around new Wolfenstein 2 has been fun. Metacritic seems to have cleaned up most of the "reviews" accusing it of being antifa or destroying the Western civilisation, but there's still the most unusual shit lurking around. I particularly like this quote from RPS, at the tail end of 920-word comment:

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the closest a video game has gotten to Gravity’s Rainbow; The New Order is more akin to Robert Harris’ Fatherland.

Also, this is apparently a thing:

My brother bought Cuphead about two weeks ago and from the looks of it he would certainly agree. I might try it for a bit over Thanksgiving break.

I had a get together with some friends, and one of them brought their PS2 and Star Wars Battlefront II. Despite this being essentially my first time playing it my side technically won against my more experienced friend (though I can't credit myself because it was the Endor stage and I got lost).

Another person brought their Switch so I got to try out Mario Odyssey for a little bit, which was fun.

Late ass response, I know, but my older brother finished it a few weeks ago and he told me of how frustrating some of the bosses were. Maybe I’ll give it a shot once the summer vacation starts. I quite like the shoot’em up genre and some a genuine challenge.

I saw that game's stuff on YouTube when it came out, and yeah, it looks awesome. The boss-only principle reminds me of last year's Furi, which is where my signature comes from. Of course, Furi is top-down/3rd person (camera can change pretty rapidly), has worse graphics but better OST and is more like an arthouse adaptation of Oblivion (the film) plot-wise. I suppose it would be a little easier, so you could practice on that first. It also has "only" 10 bosses, and you can technically finish the game halfway through. In fact, that might be morally superior.

Also, the "Cuphead is just like Dark Souls" just won't die. Not when it produces awesome stuff like this:

Super Mario Odyssey is a fun game. I also got Breath of the Wild and the Mario Kart 8 port for the Switch, which should be sufficient for a while.

Honestly nothing that great, unless you play with your friends.

The new Wolfenstein trilogy (New Order, Old Blood, Colossus) is good, but not great.  All 3 are equally playable and enjoyable, but none of them rival the 2009 Wolfenstein or the top Call of Duty games (Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, Modern Warfare).  Still worth checking out if you like solid FPS games.
