So, I saw Aaron getting mentioned on here again while catching up on what I missed. Subsequently, YouTube feed had given me trailer for this tomorrow's release, which just happens to have voice acting from his two favorite YouTubers.

Aaaand it's now one of the worst games to have been released this year already. Still, it did give us this:

Also, when it comes to actually playing games, I have been on a roguelike winning streak over the past couple months, whereas I finally finished games I started playing years ago. First, I managed to beat Spelunky Classis before New Year (which I first played in like 2013, if not earlier.) Last month, I beat hets, which is not that great, but still a pretty weird platform shooter thing.

Finally, I am now one of the comparatively few people who have beaten the (2nd) oldest roguelike - NetHack itself, which is older than anyone here besides Dylan. It "only" took about three months of continuous attempts this time, two years after I started playing, which is kinda quick given there are people who haven't beaten it after playing for more than a decade. The last day of playing it in particular was this strange mix of excitement for having gotten this far in the first place, huge tension of potentially losing it all, at any step and the boredom of objectively becoming practically unkillable by that point, having carefuly eliminated practically all the potential instakills beforehand. Not sure I'll ever repeat the experience.

-Sergeant IHE
-Stolen, poorly used Crysis 2 quote

This game's just full of surprises.

Finally, finally, finally bought a PS4 Slim, after months of planning. Already heavily stocked up on games. I just beat Limbo, Inside, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Outlast, Outlast 2, and Until Dawn. Currently starting Horizon Zero Dawn.

Is this the best film adaptation on a video game? I mean it captures the feel of Papers, Please pretty well:

I changed my mind. HDTF is one of the best things to have happened to gaming so far this year:

A pity for the 2k or so people who actually bought it though. And the YouTuber who apparently invested her (?) year's revenue into making it possible, and now has no way to treat their dog, who (apparently) got heavily sick after this.

Downloaded Galactic Civilisations 2 off Humble Bundle when it was free yesterday. Next time, I should probably post more about such giveaways, in case anyone left here is interested in such games. It's old, but apparently still very good, and since I bought Endless Space 2 a couple of months ago, I now have two 4X space strategy  games to compare to each other. (Not that I am likely to have time to seriously play either one for the foreseeable future, when their sessions stretch into dozens of hours.)

Then, Torment: Tides of Numenera can be played for free until the end of the weekend, along with 60% discount to continue playing. To those not in the know, it's theoretically an RPG, but more of a visual novel in practice, with 2 million words or so, and the ability to talk your way out of any potential fight. It certainly has a pretty unusual premise: you are a discarded avatar of a god who's just gained sentience now that your creator moved on to the next body, and your newborn mind is infected by some psychic thing (Sorrow) that's devoted to hunting down said god and anyone he's created. The idea is not wholly unique (I heard a certain Japanese game that recently got a sequel also did that, but that would be going deep into spoilers.), but still original for the genre, and there's a ton of other weirdness around.

Even so, the game and the writing have been controversial, and I can see why. In its first few hours, at least, there's an issue similar to what I felt with Life is Strange at first; you get a lot of dialogue choices, (unlike LiS, TellTale or Alpha Protocol, there's often 6-7 of them at once), but their logic is deeply questionable. So often, something strange you never heard of will be name-dropped, and you'll have some other useless or duplicate questions, but no way of asking about that very thing. You'll just have to trust it'll come up later in the story, which may never happen. The way a $4million+ game has nice area graphics, but doesn't bother with portraits during conversations, or describes the numerous recollections of god's past lives entirely through text, is also weird to say the least.

Still, there's merit to it, and I'll probably play for a bit more, but I doubt I'll buy this at this time, discount be damned.

Ridley's in Smash Bros now, and Snake and Ice Climbers are back. Too bad I'll have to wait till December to play it.
